The Farang Tourist Denied Entry Because He Had Less Than 20,000 Baht to His Name 🚫💸🤡

image.png.2a08f050e8e7dcc84f45c84ca64e0b0e.png

He watched three YouTube vlogs about "living on ten dollars a day in Chiang Mai," stuffed a pair of unwashed elephant pants into a ratty backpack, and booked a budget flight to Suvarnabhumi, genuinely believing his pure, untethered "good vibes" would somehow seamlessly wave him through passport control.

Smirking at the immigration officer while bragging about your minimalist, anti-capitalist lifestyle doesn't make you an enlightened global nomad. It officially makes you an international financial liability who can't even scrape together five hundred bucks in emergency cash.

You stood at the border counter operating under the grand delusion that the Kingdom of Thailand is desperately starving for your unique spiritual energy. Meanwhile, the brutal truth is that the unamused immigration official looked at your frayed dreadlocks, checked your completely empty wallet, and correctly identified you as a walking, talking GoFundMe campaign just waiting to happen. They don't want your acoustic guitar covers of Bob Marley; they want absolute proof that you aren't going to end up sleeping on a beach in Phuket and begging the locals for free Pad Thai.

There is absolutely nothing more spectacularly pathetic than watching you argue with a stern border guard about the "oppressive nature of fiat currency" while furiously trying to load your frozen Revolut app on the airport's free Wi-Fi. You didn't get rejected by the matrix: you literally just got denied entry because a sovereign nation took one look at your bank balance and decided they already have enough broke foreigners overstaying their welcome.

Pick up your oversized backpack, march right back to your economy seat on the next flight home, and accept that "finding yourself" strictly requires a minimum account balance.

These types really annoy me…almost as much as the female solo traveler or “fearless” girls who travel together, getting Buddha tattooed on them etc…travel 1/2 way around to party with other foreigners, then go home and tell everyone what a great time you had, how you love Thailand and Thai food…how the babba pancakes and pad Thai are so much better at the beach in Thailand… I just got an “O” visa, multiple entry, guess I am a quality tourist…nose up…

I watch some of the videos of those who have spent 3 months there and become "experts" on all things Thai

Even back when I was the same generation, as that fellow. I detested the unwashed back packers. Still do.

A notable example being, when I took MLG to a cafe in Vientiane, to watch an All Blacks game on the big screen. The place was packed, a large smelly long-toe-nailed backpacker decided to sit on top, of the next bar table to us and put his stinking feet on our table next to our food.

That he didn't get my cutlery stabbed through his feet, is a testament to my self restraint.

I’ve been to KSR a few times to see it and to check out the silver shops…has to be the worst food and over priced…the crowd was bizarre kinda reminded me of the vibe in Thamal Kathmandu…same basic types of people…can’t stand to see the beg packers either…mooching money of people who really can’t afford it…

Does anyone remember the Farang running the food cart in Soi 4? While not your average feral backpacker, still an odd encounter. Perhaps just having a crack.

No, I recall a few farang bar owners, going way way back to the Asoke beer garden next to and behind Soi Cowboy, mostly Australians… What did the guy sell on Soi 4? I recall a farang girl again, way way back, on KSR “helping” a Thai woman sell Kway Teow… then there was the farang supposedly from Belgium, all his bags, pan handling in the Nana BTS saying he only needed 500bht more to go home…saw him there a few times over the years…told a few Thai girls who took pity not to give him shit…

The only non Thai street vendor I recall was Ali and his Kebab stall on Sukhumvit circa late 90s / early 2000’s

I like them, good for them, gotta have fun trying to see the world their way, they grow up, become capitilists, mongers etc,

Great to see young people meeting new countries, most don't learn much, some do,

Love it. Encourage it.

Better than staying at home having 2 failed marriages before your first trip to asia just to fuck delicous brown meat.

Up our way in the village was a Banglideshi who'd travel village to village making roti, very popular.

In Bangkok I seem to vaugly remember a few Indians, remembering they have had citizenship for quite a while, have a look at the Indian area over near Chinatown. Many of the Suk area was owned by Indians, I remember Meechai telling me he bought land or leased land from an Indian familywhen he first opened Cabbages and Condoms or extended it.
