Bangkok roads submerged as flood disaster declared

A flood emergency disaster has been declared across Bangkok after more than 300mm (12in) of rain fell since Thursday, leaving roads in the Thai capital submerged.

On Sunday, Bangkok's Metropolitan Authority said the rains have subsided, but canal water levels remain high. The city's governor has warned that the flooding is not yet over.

People have been urged to stay at home and those living close to the city's network of canals have been advised to move their belongings to upper floors.

Thunderstorms are common in Thailand at this time of year but extreme weather in recent days has inundated Bangkok's drainage system, causing traffic chaos on roads that are already famously congested.

Watched this on tonight's news. Seems like the dam release had a lot to do with it. Was in LOS for the 2011 floods. Remember flying from BKK to Chiang Mai and seeing the full extent of the crisis from the air.

Back in late 1990's Pattaya sewage used to ooze out of the holes in the streets, especially  near the intersection of South Pattaya RD and Beach RD.  Things have improved quite a bit but more work is needed by looking at this video.

As always reporting is over reacting, they make it sound as if the whole of Bangkok is underwater which it isn’t.

It’s confined to Northern Areas such as Nontaburi and Pratum Thani, along the Chao Phraya River and areas to the east along the Lat Phrao / Miniburi corridor

In other areas there is localised flooding after heavy rains but it drains away quite soon after
