anonymouse
I've got to agree 99% of the books set in Thailand are trash. The only one's that have come anywhere close are John Ralston Saul's two Thailand novels and Nigel Krauth's 'Freedom Highway' none of them materpieces but they are well crafted novels and Krauth's very well researched - though it obviously owe's a debt to Graham Greene's the Quiet American. Guest
i have enjoyed freedom highway. i have somewhere in my shelf a non belletristic account from those days and it very much concurres with the events of freedom highway. very sad that those days still influence thailand's political and socio-economical landscape of today. people who have made fortunes in those day from the drugtrade are still in positions of power, former members of extreme rightwing death squads like the 'krating daeng' have recently been used again for extrajudical killings and the farmers are still in the same shite position they were in those day. i wish someone would write a well researched novel linking the events of those days with today's problems.
