dddave
I can't remember the last time I sat thru a western and I was about to give this one a pass when something in the dialog grabed me with its' straight-forwardness. It was probably ten minutes before it suddenly dawned on me that I was watching ROBERT DUVAL AND KEVIN COSTENER (who also directed the film) so deeply did they inhabit their roles. This movie is a throwback to the old days; good guys and bad guys, those who wanted to colonise the west as baronies and the independant cowboy who will only just take so much shit. Normally, I would have found it all pretty hokey but this movie finds a way to to make casual honesty and determination something worth watching.
