Acting Prime Minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan yesterday fled from protesters to hide in a "safe house".

He is scheduled to leave for Chiang Rai today, a source close to him said.

Niwattumrong fled from an Air Force auditorium near the Air Force Officers' Club after protesters led by the People's Democratic Reform Committee broke into the compound.

The acting prime minister was meeting with the Election Commission on preparations for the new vote.

The source said the acting prime minister kept a low profile in the safe house and did not go to work at his temporary office at the Defence Ministry.

He is scheduled to visit the people affected by the earthquake in Chiang Rai.

It's a bit of a worry when the Thai Air Force can't even protect their own base. Or do you think word might have come from on high that the air force guards should all have a tea break just as the yellow shirts broke in.

I notice Suthep was right behind his troops...about 10 kms behind them! He didn't turn up till someone phoned to say the dirty work had been done.

Smart move by PM I'd say.

You may not be aware, Flash, but beneath the disguise of being a super patriot who loves only what's best for Thailand ...and his wallet..is the leader of the yellow shirts, as seen by our wily undercover photographer in Phuket recently.

HM was seen leaving Sririrat Hospital a few years ago wearing a pink jacket. Suddenly, everyone started wearing pink ... for a while. But government schools required teachers and students to wear yellow shirts every Monday for quite a few years. (HM was born on a Monday, and yellow is Monday's colour.) That has stopped now, so my wife gave away a stack of extra yellow shirts she had to the roadside vendors near her house. She said when she went out the next day, she saw all six of them all wearing yellow shirts! :)
