Flashermac
Remember that Laotians drive on the right! Taxis are plentiful and cheap in Wiengchan - plus they know where they are going. A car would be nice for trips outside the city though. I like the Hai Soke. There's a cheaper backpacker part, but the main hotel is an upcountry Thai style place. Think I paid about 600 baht for a big room with double full size beds, A/C, fridge, shower and satellite TV. You can walk a block or so to some nice restaurants aimed at more affluent Laos and the backpackers. Best thing about the Hia Soke is that it has Christmas lights all over the outside, so you can find it easy enough at night. Wiengchan is a great place to get lost after dark.
