BANGKOK, Thailand- A freelance Italian photographer, Fabio Polenghi, has been shot and killed while covering violence today in the Thai capital.

48-year-old Fabio Polenghi was shot as Thai military forces stormed a “Red Shirt†protest camp in an attempt to end a weeks long stand-off involving anti-government protesters and government forces.

The experienced photographer was one of several journalists covering the violence to be hit by gunfire today in Bangkok. Four other members of the media, three foreign and one local, were also hit by gunfire today, though none were killed.

Polenghi’s work has taken him around the world, predominantly working for various magazines, mostly attached to the fashion industry.

Polenghi was also a film director, producing several documentaries, according to an Italian language media industry profile website.

An Italian photographer, who knew Polenghi, confirmed his death on social networking site Twitter: “Confirming Italian photographer, colleague and friend Fabio Polenghi died this morning after being shot in the stomach,†photographer Dario Pignatelli wrote.

In other development, Thai ‘Red Shirt’ protest leaders handed themselves in to local police after the nation’s military tore through protest camps across Bangkok, after long standoff over elections that has lasted many months.

Explosions and gunfire have rocked Bangkok for the last few days as military and Red Shirt protesters clashed. A number of protesters have used home made bombs as well as guns against the military.

Dozens of protesters, innocent civilians, military and journalists have been killed or wounded in skirmishes across the capital in the last few days and weeks.

I don’t think they are targeted at all. I think that with unhealthy competition to get that one shot, they put themselves in truly stupid positions and then complain (or at least their organizations do) when they get shot. There is no telling if someone that is shot was aimed at, hit be wild shot, or hit by a ricochet. But I can say, that if you are around people that are shooting and you are not directly behind them, there is a chance you will get hit. If both sides are shooting the chances increase by magnitudes of thousands.

Sensible comment TH.

When covering battles, journalists are at risk period...

I seriously doubt either side have it together to target a particular group like journalists which could be an asset to both sides...

Try being a journalist in Burma these days...

One Dutch journalist was shot in the shoulder whilst running away but only has a flesh wound, in the same Dutch article it's claimed that an Italian journalist has been killed.
