Most of the M$ updates are good. Not all of them are. Internet Exploder is something you really don't want to touch.

Sweetness, nearly everybody on the planet with more than about three functioning brain cells left knows by now that running Microsoft Windows Exploder, *ANY* version, is about the WORST thing you can do to a PC (second only to running Microsoft Windows, but that's a different rant). There's a REASON Microsoft is considering changing its name. Even THEY know it sucks so badly that everyone knows not to use it, and knows to warn their friends not to use it. Google Chrome works. So does Mozilla Firefox.
  3. Mekong, the water was more than just the coolant at Three Mile Island. It was also the neutron moderator. Without the moderator, the nuclear chain reaction stops, all by itself. That design is inherently safe, unlike the graphite-moderated RBMK reactors at Chernobyl.
  4. You might try upstairs at Tokyu, the big department store that anchors MBK. I found my way into their general electrical department a few years ago, and was more than a little surprised at what all they had. More like a hardware store than a mall department store.
  5. It was predictable, it was predicted, and the people who predicted it were reviled.
  6. What nobody seems to understand is that it is easy and cheap these days to build missile guidance kits. If the Big Bad Boys (Iran, Syria, ...) wanted Hamas to be using guided missiles for those attacks, instead of unguided rockets, they'd have them. This has implications.
  7. "Lucy", directed by Luc Besson, starring Scarlett Johansson. The story is basically a joke. The ideas under the story are extremely thought-provoking.
  8. The last sentence in that piece is the key one. "Miss Apisada said she had never been involved in the drug trade and did not understand why the four policemen did not identify themselves from the beginning instead of showing aggression."
  9. Munchy, you might want to do some "cold & dead" battery lifetime testing. That Asus Celeron I mentioned has an interesting design feature: It is NEVER fully powered off. It is ALWAYS draining juice out of the battery, at least at a very low level. If I don't want it to die the death, it HAS to live on the AC adapter when not in use. (It appears that it would take several days to a few weeks to drain the battery completely, but drain it it will.) When I called Asus tech support about it, they told me this was a feature. It is SUPPOSED to do that, so it can boot up quicker. That's the LAST time I buy an Asus laptop.
  10. You don't own ANYTHING. The government does. You just rent it from them. This is the principal danger of unelected governments. They don't have to answer to anyone but their own consciences. In some cases, that's not enough.
  11. There's at least one simple fix. Google Chrome works as well as Firefox, and they both slaughter Microsoft Internet Exploder.
  12. The standard recommendation applies. Download MalwareBytes, let it update itself, then reboot into Safe Mode and run a full scan.
  13. A fatwa is not a religious "edict", the way Western tradition thinks of it. Rather, it is specifically the answer to a question about what Islam requires in a particular situation. The first rule of fatwa is that anyone may ask anyone for fatwa, that is, guidance. The second rule is that, if you ask someone for guidance, because you are uncertain, you are expected to follow their guidance, regardless of whether you agree with it. (If you knew what was required, you wouldn't have asked the question in the first place.) This means that Muslims are advised to be VERY careful who they ask for fatwa. Many places put fairly strong restrictions on whose answers must be considered "informed" (i.e., this guy actually knows what he's talking about), and thus binding. I would like to hear more about who supposedly issued the "fatwa" at the heart of all this. Is this some nut case, or is this actually someone who is well-educated, at recognized schools, who is respected by the "Senior Scholars"? I.e, is female genital mutilation actually mainstream Islamic practice? Because if it is, we have a problem.
  14. Again, I DON'T see him saying that they actually cancelled the service.
  15. I love to hear about these "studies". They are all written by inland-dwelling landlubbers, who, never having seen an ocean or a beach in their lives, wring their hands and wail at the prospect of the oceans rising a few inches (centimeters). Because they have lived inland all their lives, and never seen the oceans, they fail to understand that tides, which follow a 24-hour (roughly) cycle, are measured in feet (meters). We lived in Seattle half a century ago. At that time, just about every mother in Seattle had a tide table in her purse, so she would know what time to take the children to the beach. Seattle sees 10-foot (3-meter) tides.
  16. The one thing that I *HAVEN'T* seen, ANYWHERE, is Comcast actually telling anyone that they did, in fact, cancel the guy's account.
  17. Start by hitting it with MalwareBytes, run in Safe Mode.
  18. He didn't say what price range he was looking for.
  19. A friend of mine has asked for suggestions for apartments near Tesco On Nut. He adds "would prefer Government Electric rates with good internet." Any recommendations? I'll pass them back.
  20. Some years back, i saw a letter to the editor in the Bangkok Post. The author commented that the bargirls frequently spoke better English than the government people, because the bargirls got more practice and their livelihood depended on it.
  21. Hopefully, New Zealand told Malaysia that Mr. Ismail is wanted on very serious charges in New Zealand, and he would STAY wanted on those charges. With any luck, they added that he was persona non grata, meaning he can't come back as a diplomat, either.
  22. Before you go all-out gung ho in favor of property tax, you might want to review Proposition 13 in California, USA, paying particular attention to what it did and why. Property tax means that you do not own your home. You merely rent it from the government.
  23. Large numbers of young men without women is, historically, a Very Bad Thing.
