  1. The parallel universe where Mitt leads all polls

By: Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns

    October 1, 2012 04:27 AM EDT

To talk with any working Republican political operative these days is to hear the same tale of woe: a grim accounting of the past few weeks, a dash of gallows humor and a measure of hope that President Obama is still beatable. Never in question is that Mitt Romney is trailing — the private surveys these strategists see for their down-ballot clients make that clear. The only question is by how much.

But hanging up the phone or clicking out of e-mail is to find a parallel universe on the right. On TV, talk radio and especially the Internet is a place where the swing-state polls that show Romney losing are not just inaccurate but part of an intentional plot by the heretofore unknown media-pollster axis to depress Republican voters. In this other world, Romney not only isn’t losing — he’s on the verge of a convincing victory.

“I believe if the election were held today, Romney would win by 4 or 5 points,†trumpeted Dick Morris on Fox News last week, predicting a win for the GOP ticket in Florida, Ohio, Virginia, Nevada and Pennsylvania. In public polls right now, Romney is losing in each of those states. But, Morris said, that’s because the data are all wrong.

  2. I just had a look at Fox News' website. I understand why research found out the Fexnews audience is much less informed than the average. If you look at the politics section all major headlines quote the GOP camp and of course are all anti the current government.

Which of course means the Foxnews audience must think that the GOP has the upper hand all matters politics, while Obama and the White House are just screwing up everything.

And that explains why the right had to develop the idea that all polls are screwed: the polls show a very different reality: Obama still has strong support among the majority of the electorate. Otherwise even the Fox audience (at least two or three of them) might get the idea, that they are misinformed about US politics and the election.

On the other side, Huffington Post has a much easier job producing a positive image of Obama and the election campaign and attacking Romney and co, since the polls go in their direction. But of course HuffPost is a much lesser force in the US media since it only exist online and neither doesn't influence the Dem politics like Foxnews tv/radio personalities do.

  3. You are forgetting that Hitler in his last days declared that Germany "was not worthy of him" and ordered the infrastructure destroyed - power plants, waterworks etc. He sent young boys out to fight and refused to allow civilians to flee from Berlin as the Red Army approached, causing tens of thousand to die or be gang raped by the Russians. He would definitely have tried to take the West down with him, if he could.

The Japanese certainly would have used the bomb, and it is now known they had their own nuclear weapon programme. They had another to use germ warfare against the US. They had already used it against many Chinese cities.

    http://en.wikipedia...._weapon_program

Hitler might have done it on the USSR. As Flash said, he went totally crazy in the end. And Hitler saw the Russians as 'subhuman beings', while he saw the Brits in a way close to the Germans...

And I think the Japanese would have dropped the bomb on the Chinese, just have a look at the Nanjing Massacre (which Japan still denies).

  4. "In the six decades since People’s Liberation Army troops invaded Tibet, China’s Communist Party has been unable to destroy Tibetans’ national identity or devotion to their leader, the Dalai Lama. It is not for lack of trying. In the quest to transform Tibet, China has launched Marxist campaigns against religion and the Dalai Lama himself; tortured monks, nuns, and lay people; created a permanent military presence; confiscated rare minerals and resources; and inundated Tibet with ethnic Han Chinese. In the diplomatic arena, Beijing claims Tibet as a “core interest†and rebuffs foreign concerns as interference in China’s internal affairs. In neighboring Nepal, Beijing is trying to end Kathmandu’s historic role as a way station for Tibetan refugees on their way to India and to clamp down on Nepal’s own well-established Tibetan refugee community."

No, Unit, they won't send the carrier to Tibet. tongue.gif

  5. The carrier that China has was bought from a former Soviet satellite and re-fitted with a Chinese engine. That's a long way from building up their arsenal with Chinese built battleships.

I guess the Chinese know that. But that's not the point. It seems that, if they decide for something they will but millions, if not billions into a project as well as much manpower and time needed - like the USA in the 1950s and 1960s.

There was recent a comparison between the number of aerospace engineers in the USA and China graduating each year. In the USA it was like 400 (and numbers going down) and in China like 5000 (and thousands more who applied for it). I can't find the source, but here is a similar comparison:

And, indeed, China’s aviation boom — with catalysts ranging from well-connected tycoons to ambitious American advisers to provincial boosters — is a microcosm of China’s epic rise. Where that country’s core assets can be brought to bear — scale, mass, will, central planning — breathtaking progress ensues.China, for instance, is building 100 new airports today; the U.S., one or two. China has created a giant aeronautical complex in Xi’an for 250,000 engineers.

In my opinion no country can afford to underestimate the speed of development in China...

  6. I first viewed such in a hotel near Narita airport.

    Tiny hotel room.

Bathroom/WC was all fiberglass/plastic. Manufactured in two pieces. The seam was horizontal half way between floor and ceiling.

Thought it was a neat design.

Don't know what they would have to do when it comes time to remodel. As the two halfs would never fit through any doorway.

Very easy to clean though. Just hose it all down.

Houses in Japan are not being remodeled, they are being replaced.

    Anyway, back to the USA.

  7. China launched their first aircraftcarrier earlier this week, not even operational yet.

to have a full operational group, estimates are to wait another 8 to 10 years.

so no near future at all.....

Ten years is nothing. A major difference between Western democracies and the Chinese Communist Party is that the Chinese government has long term plans which span decades, while in the US and Europe they mostly plan just until the next election.

I remember CNN saying in 1999 (while sitting in a hotel room in Hong Kong) that China needs 20 years for to have an own car industry. Meanwhile China hasn't not only their own cars, but high speed trains and airplanes and they are preparing to land on the Moon.

Saying that the current carrier is not functional is only for to appease the Western audience. Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines et al. will clearly know what the development of the carrier means and I guess they are extremely concerned (as the USA are as well behind closed doors).

By the way the USA have increased military in the area in past years considerably. The "Great Game" for the leadership in Asia is on again.

The struggle in the Middle East might be soon the smaller problem for the USA and the rest of the Western world and its allies. That's one reason while the USA and its allies should clean up the mess in the area soon (which ends and starts of course with Israel).

  8. "SAN FRANCISCO — The tiny apartments are touted as "affordable by design."

New York City has launched a pilot project to test them out. Boston is doing it too. But here in San Francisco, where a growing number of residents are being priced out of the housing market by a revived tech economy, city leaders are considering the smallest micro-units of all.

At a minimum 150 square feet of living space — 220 when you add the bathroom, kitchen and closet — the proposed residences are being hailed as a pivotal option for singles. Opponents fear that a wave of "shoe box homes" would further marginalize families of modest means who are desperate for larger accommodations."

    LINK

I had a 260 square feet/ 24 square meter apartment in Tokyo. It was the biggest in the apartment house. In this size you'll need a real intelligent design. My bathroom for example looked like being formed out of one piece of plastic (in included even a japanese style bathtub for to sit in). It was very easy to clean with the shower head. cool.gif

The apartment also had build in closets where I put my Futon during the day and all the other stuff.

  9. Pick the poll you want to believe.

    Veterans retreating from President Obama

I only follow the meta polls. Those single polls concentrating on small group of voters don't have much value IMHO. They just show how desperate the news and politics websites are for information. Like they compared the number of twitter tweet per minute during the conventions. It's pseudo information without much.

Next poll: waiters at McDonalds versus waiters at Burger King versus Pizza Hut.

  10. Sounds like what I remember saying about Catholics when JFK was running for president.

    Skewed and Unskewed Polls

In most all things, I try to follow Hanlon’s (or Heinlein’s) Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.â€

This is particularly important to remember when looking at polls. Sometimes, however, one must wonder.

As I pointed out yesterday, the result of Romney’s “really bad week†was that Romney had gone from 5 or 6 points behind in Gallup, to essentially tied. Even so, a number of people have noted that there are some odd assumptions in that poll, and others. Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen talked about it recently.

That's a right wing source. It follows a new complaint by the conservatives that not only the media are biased, but the polls as well.

My guess is that the voter ID law might give states like Florida to the GOP, since thousands of Latinos might not have proper IDs to vote.

  11. Will Willard

get disfellowshipped or excommunicated from the Mormons

for allowing Paul Ryan to be his vice Presidental candidate.

    Mormon's hate Catholics!

Hey BT that's pure speculation. With Romney the Mormons will arrive at the center of power for the first time. They will do anything to support Romney.

  12. I think too the race is completely open. Even though most polls show Obama ahead, it's mostly within the margin of error. To make it worse for Obama the new voter ID laws in swing states like Florida might keep thousands of Dems voters away from the voting booth.

If Romney weren't so extremely bad, the GOP would be a clear winner by now. But on the other hand the selection of Romney is a clear sign in how bad shape the GOP currently is.

  13. about right, we have a working social security, although misused by many ver the last few years, same as a working medicare system.

and the rich pay more tax than the poor :(

And in Germany pensions usually don't evaporate, if a company goes bankrupt like in the USA.

Anyway, I wonder who want to live in USA at the moment (except the Americans and the really poor). The USA have been the land of dreams for generations of Europeans. I guess this is mostly over now.

BTW, misuse of social security is a problem, but a minor one in Germany, since the recipients of social security are being checked frequently. Freeloading has become much harder in the past years.

Some US media are declaring that Romney just lost the election:

Today, Mitt Romney Lost the Election

    By Josh Barro Sep 18, 2012 12:02 AM GMT+0200

You can mark my prediction now: A secret recording from a closed-door Mitt Romneyfundraiser, released today by David Corn at Mother Jones, has killed Mitt Romney's campaign for president.

On the tape, Romney explains that his electoral strategy involves writing off nearly half the country as unmoveable Obama voters. As Romney explains, 47 percent of Americans "believe that they are victims." He laments: "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

So what's the upshot? "My job is not to worry about those people," he says. He also notes, describing President Obama's base, "These are people who pay no income tax. Forty-seven percent of Americans pay no income tax."

This is an utter disaster for Romney.

  16. High Fidelity, along with an explanation for a "Chick Flick."

Chick flick is a slang term for a film mainly dealing with love and romance and designed to appeal to a largely female target audience. Although many types of films may be directed toward the female gender, "chick flick" is typically used only in reference to films that are heavy with emotion or contain themes that are relationship-based (although not necessarily romantic as many other themes may be present.)

    Shit

Actually I am not a fan of romance movies aka chik flicks, but "Friends with Benefits "is actually a great movie. Highly entertaining. Mila Kunis is great and sexy.

  17. Not surprised really.

    http://news.yahoo.co...-extremism.html

Since the beginning of the Obama administration, hate groups have grown 755 percent, according to the Southern Law Poverty Center. Besides the recession, antagonism over a black Democratic president has been cited for its rise: A known neo-Nazi Web forum, which had amassed 90,000 users over 12 years, saw an increase of 5,000 sign-ups the day after the 2008 election. By April 2009, membership had nearly doubled to 160,000.

Gun sales exploded as well. The NRA is talking about a secret plan by Obama to limit gun sales. ph34r.gif

(NEWSER) – Fears that President Obama would take people's guns away in his first term proved to be unfounded, but a lot of people appear to think he's waiting for his second term. Gun sales are experiencing a major pre-election boom, just like they did four years ago, reports NBC. Sales are up 50% at Smith & Wesson, and Ruger made its millionth firearm of the year by mid-August, almost as many as it made in the whole of 2011. Gun dealers say a major driver of sales is fear of a looming crackdown on guns—although Business Insiderfinds that the only gun laws Obama has signed as president have actually expanded gun rights. surprised.gif

"I should put Obama’s picture on the wall up there," says one New Jersey gun salesman. "I’d name him salesman of the month!" birthday.gifBut other dealers say fear of an increase in crime amid economic woes has at least as much to do with the surge in sales. "The biggest new group of buyers now are senior citizens," the owner of a North Carolina gun shop tells CNBC's Closing Bell. "Ten thousand baby boomers a day are turning 65. They can't run, they can't fight, they got to shoot."

  18. HH! LOL. That post has to go down as a classic! I was cracking up reading it. Wow! Dont go away for too long. I miss u buddy!

Yep, this HH line is great:

"Obama who, as a secret Muslim, keeps his hawkish alliances with the Muslim Brotherhood and using an occasional diversionaly attack on Taliban targets to try to establish his "creds" as being a tough hombre."

That's best theory since I have learnt that 9/11 was planned by the US government: Obama killed Osama for to divert the people from his islamist connections. thumbup.gifhippy.gif
