  1. A Czech news site on Monday (March 23) revealed that 80 percent of the much-touted traunch of Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) rapid test kits "donated" from China are faulty, forcing healthcare workers to rely on conventional laboratory tests.

    ...

...  the tests yield both false positive and negative results. "We tested those who searched for a sampling point. Fortunately, we were so farsighted that samples were immediately compared with traditional tests, and that just proved the error rate of the [Chinese rapid] tests, ”said Svrcinova.

According to data from China’s central government, the capital of Hubei Province registered 50,006 coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, including 2,535 deaths in the two months leading up to March 26, CNA reported.

Yet recently, a local mortuary prepared 5,000 urns in just two days for the cremated remains of virus fatalities, according to Chinese media. On March 23, the government allowed the public to visit mortuaries to pick up the remains of their relatives, resulting in a line 200-meters long springing up at the Hankou Mortuary in Wuhan, reports said.

Whatever their way of counting is, in Siam there still is a surprisingly low number of casualties and infected persons available. Although they have been much more exposed to the Chinamen-Virus than the Italians for example. Very very surprising.

No tests. No Problem! Oh, a patient died on the ventilator, obviously the cause is pneumonia. No need to test.

I think S. Korea has been best at handling the situation. Their main tool is extensive testing.

  4. I guess the military can not get or pass on the virus! In the military you have large groups of people in close contact using common eating, sleeping, and washing areas. An ideal situation to rapidly spread an infection! :doah:

  5. Here is what the Senate GOP and Trump wanted,

    https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2020/03/trump-on-usd500-billion-slush-fund-ill-be-the-oversight.html

Monday’s White House coronavirus press conference brought a slew of questions as reporters hoped to parse out why and when President Trump intends to lift the national social distancing measures and how the Republican stimulus bill would responsibly distribute a $500 billion corporate slush fund that currently allows for the Treasury Secretary to withhold the names of the businesses that receive bailout cash.

I'm sure Trump Enterprises would be the first in line to get the cash!

Again, considering the size and scope of the exposure Thailand, Philippines, sub Saharan Africa, has compared to Italy, there should be reports of a huge numbers of people going to hospitals, dying, etc,

There isn't. Any sharp increase in sicknesses, no matter if you are in a developed country or not, has their own media.

The Thai government has the numbers of how full the hospitals are. They must be seeing the trend of  hospital capacity becoming overwhelmed. That is why the emergency orders are NOW being issued. It is that spike in hospitalizations that forebodes big problems ahead.

As for African countries, they have a younger population than in Europe. Perhaps the death rate from CV-19 in that younger population distribution is <1% of the infected. Would this be noticed over the usual deaths by pneumonia and heart disease?

EBola had a death rate of 50% and was wiping out whole families and communities. Plus the sight of patients bleeding is very alarming. That is why it was noticed by WHO and dealt with by extreme measures. Less than 12000 people have died from EBola and over 18000 people have died from CV-19.

John Mark Dougan is living in Russia and the following video he mentions that he has covid-19. The meds he can obtain in Russia costs $8 for 60 pills...in the USA, it is $8 per pill...He mentions his symptoms and how he is feeling. From what he says, the virus is not so serious? Me thinks YMMV.

Here is a different experience from a marathon runner that got infected. Since the ICU was NOT full at the time he was sick, he survived after spending 13 days in ICU.

Reported numbers not being accurate I totally agree with you. Why isn't Pattaya, Manila, Jakarta or Kuala Lumpur looking like Lombardy, Italy? Even remotely?

Italy has a well developed healthcare system with excellent doctors. A sick Italian doesn't have to come up with 1 or 2 weeks wages to pay for a CV-19 test! Plus Italy has an older population than the other countries you mention.

We may see the elderly retiring to the tropical zones in the future if this gets bad enough. The lack of cases compared to size of population, exposure to Chinese tourists, workers, as well as western people sticks out like a sore thumb.

Philippines, Thailand, 2 countries with large numbers of western and Chinese tourists, sub saharan Africa with tens of thousands of Chinese workers have an incredible low number of deaths as well as infected given the size and exposure.

Those countries are NOT doing adequate testing. That is why their reported numbers are low. Singapore is at 455 cases. Brazil has 1593 cases. Florida has 830 cases.

  10. It seems the Thai government has made it impossible for Thais to return home.

The official pronouncement said Thai citizens needed a medical certificate saying they were “fit to fly” but also a letter from a Thai embassy certifying they were citizens if they planned to return from abroad.

Obviously a Thai passport can't get you into Thailand!

  11. https://www.statista.com/chart/21173/hospitalization-icu-admission-and-fatality-rates-for-reported-coronavirus-cases/

4,226 COVID-19 cases were reported to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as of March 16 and the organization released a preliminary report showing how the coronavirus is impacting different age groups. It analyzed hospitalizations, intensive care unit admissions and fatalities across different age groups among 2,449 patients who had a known age. The patten is similar to other countries that have experienced major outbreaks such as China and Italy with COVID-19 having the most severe impact among older people. The CDC’s analysis found that 31 percent of all cases, 45 percent of hospitalizations, 53 percent of ICU admissions and 80 percent of all fatalities from the virus occurred among adults aged 65 plus with the highest percentage of severe outcomes happening among those aged 85 and over.

For those of a mathematical slant, have a look at this paper about modelling epidemics.
