  1. Gary Numan's 'cars,' and 'you shook me all night long' from AC/DC were the first two songs I learned on the drum kit. Which means I had to play them repetitiously - hours. My father grew to hate hearing them so much he hid my cassette tape. :)

Will give the Kraftwerk a listen.

  2. he started out comparing himself to elvis and the beatles.... now it's jesus and god. oh boy. :)

one hopes people in general are getting more sophisticated with time. world is filled with kanyes. folks with a little talent (couple songs are OK), and a shitload of admiration for themselves coupled with a deficit of self criticism.

this is all good for shits and giggles. oh yes. it's that mass of people that choose to elevate the kanyes of the world which can leave you feeling... aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!! why!?!?!?!?

i try to resist having a dim worldview... i fucking try i swear. it's a tough battle.

  3. Was a being a bit tongue in cheek sir - I don't literally see it as a grand or not-so-grand philosophical expression of free speech.

That said, however ridiculous the circumstances, the film does now have a significance beyond its content. But even if it didn't my opinion would've been the same. Fair to middling.

One man's ceiling is another one's floor and all that.

  4. In the past I've been critical of the site (stickman) -- elements I didn't like about it. Many of those things would be general criticisms I would level against the expat community of Thailand.

But all that aside, I also found the site to be informative and probably the most successful in disseminating genuine info that helped people new (or not so new) to Thailand (who would otherwise be clueless). It's a body of mostly solid work spanning several years -- and that is an impressive feat.

Here's a true story - after my first trip to LoS I came back and enrolled in a class at Wat Thai ( large Wat in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles). The class was held on Sat/Sun morning in the temple basement, and our instructor was an old Thai woman. The class was a motley mix of 2nd gen Thai immigrants born in LA, falangs married to Thais, backpackers, and others. One chap, a dentist, was in a quick relationship with a woman he met on a trip and was "very much in love" (according to him). To my surprise, the teacher told him to please be cautious sending this woman money until he knew her for a significant period of time. THEN - this surprised me most of all -- she wrote the words "stickman bangkok" on the whiteboard, and told the guys in the class to look him up -- in order to learn about pitfalls to avoid. She laughed and said she loved reading stickman. I would've never predicted that.

    Very very very true story.

Whatever path you choose, good luck.

  5. nicky was pleasant and a bit funny. i remember his wild hairstyle (re: canine einstein) and him just kinda hovering around for a few moments and checking you out before getting bored moments later and wandering off. only to circle back around randomly. had nice intelligent eyes for a dog - actually had a picture of him on my phone that was stolen in bkk - it was that crazy ass hair i had to. :)

    rip

  6. 26 of 32 electorates complete now. Still 54 to 45 against independence. I was wondering how it would pan out if they actually did it. Oh well.

Note: Glasgow, largest electorate by far, came in 53% yes. No matter what it's been close, curious to see the aftermath.

  7. Use Amazon a couple times a week. Will try and remember the T360 through-link.

Question: How the f*ck did you come up with a book by 'the blether' to be displayed? That guy used to be all over the thaivisa forum, you couldn't escape him - considered himself the font of wisdom on Thailand and yet he only traveled there. Another fool who thought Stickman was a god and was dying to be one of 'the guys' in expat circles, he left there after folks realized he was slinging bullshit.

    Ahhhhh... Thailand.

  8. Trayvon Martin case was a reflection of our own system/cultural shortcomings. The biggest was an egomaniacal prosecution going for the most serious charge possible and ignoring manslaughter, tossing it in as an afterthought at the last moment. Several jurors have come forward saying in no way was Zimmerman 'innocent' but they were conflicted on the more serious murder charge and confused. Horrible case - and conservative commentators have redacted their support of Zimmerman in lieu of his domestic violence, paranoia, and firearms obsession coming to light since.

Zimmerman was acting out his fantasy, and Martin defending himself was all the spark needed for Zimmerman to gun him down. Repulsive human being, I hope Karma gets him somehow someway.

  9. " The Ambassador" - 2011 film created by a Dane, Mads Brügger. Had heard it was like Borat, but I found the two films different. The film's creator, Mads, purchases himself credentials making him a Liberian Ambassador. He then passes himself off as someone who wants to smuggle diamonds and goes on a bizarre path of bribing officials and entering shady deals. And they are a plenty. Though his character was a bit ridiculous the film is more subtle and serious than Borat. Anyway - I liked it a lot. So much so that I looked the guy up and watched the film he did prior, "Red Chapel."

In "Red Chapel" he took two partners, both Korean immigrants to Denmark, one of whom had a significant handicap -- into North Korea to present a sketch comedy. They got away with it by marketing it as a couple immigrants reuniting with Korea (and choosing to go to North Korea rather than South) . You can tell they went with the intent of poking fun, but the film takes on uncomfortable and serious undertones as the severity of oppression seeps out from even the most simple interactions there and this takes a toll on the immigrants, and the director. Never seen a film like it and still processing. Shame I never heard of it prior - because it's fucking good.
