  1. The real bridge is very different to the one in the film, being made from pre-constructed metal frames imported from Japan, whereas the film version was made of wood.

There were two bridges built by the POW's, a metal one and a wooden one.

  2. Moonrise Kingdom (2012) - charming little tale about 2 kids running away together. With Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel amongst others. Reminds me of The Grand Budapest Hotel - maybe because Wes Anderson directed both. Worth a watch.

Got this but never watched it! Great cast!

  3. Southpaw (2015)

    MV5BMjI1MTcwODk0MV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTgwMDM5NTE@._V1_SX214_AL_.jpg

IMDB - "Boxer Billy Hope turns to trainer Tick Willis to help him get his life back on track after losing his wife in a tragic accident and his daughter to child protection services."

Good director in Antoine Fuqua, and good cast in Jake Gyllenhaal and Forest Whitaker, and as expected it doesn't disappoint.

  4. Kajaki (2014)

    MV5BMTQ5MjQ2MjU5NV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzI2Mzg5NjE@._V1_SX214_AL_.jpg

IMDB - "Kajaki Dam 2006. A company of young British soldiers encounter an unexpected, terrifying enemy. A dried-out river bed, and under every step the possibility of an anti-personnel mine. A mine that could cost you your leg - or your life."

This is a superb film but also quite harrowing as the land mines take their toll.

An astrophysics postgraduate student has won the 22nd annual World Porridge Making Championship.

Simon Rookyard submitted his PhD thesis on pulsars just two weeks ago.

Held in Carrbridge in the Cairngorms National Park, the event attracts an international field of competitors. The winner is awarded the Golden Spurtle trophy.

Dr Izhar Khan from Aberdeen won the competition last year using a spurtle made by one of his patients.
