gene1944
I just heard on the Thai Nation TV that there was a fire in the Baiyoke Tower at about 9PM. I think it was the 43 story tower (not the great big one) but I am not certain. The fire was caused by electrical problems (short circuit) and is either out or is at least under control. Don't know about casualties or the extent of the damage yet.
gene1944
Saw an update. Apparently no deaths but lots of smoke and smoldering flames in the clothing shops at the bottom of the tower. Still not clear to me if it was in the tower or the shops near the tower. Firemen had a good workout to put out the flames.
shotover
The clothing shops in the basement of this tower in the Pratunam area are a real maze, and I would hate to get caught in there with a fast-moving fire.
gene1944
Per Bangkok Nation this morning: The fire started on the first floor in a clothing store and it took 20 fire engines/crews an hour to control. The only injuries were from "bruising", smoke inhalation and some people unconscious due to smoke. No deaths.
Guest
There is a small paragraph on the front page of the bangkok Post today about the fire. It was nothing major according to the article.
gene1944
Yes I saw that. The front page of the Nation had a 6x8" colored picture and 8" column story about it on the front page. Maybe its because it happened late evening and the Nation publishes later? I don't know.

Guest
The Nation said some people were waiting on the roof for evacuation, shit I think they would be waiting a helluva long time. I don't think I would fancy being caught in a high rise fire in Thailand and waiting for evacuation. The big tower has all that crap on the rrof and I don't know if they have a heli pad up there, but I would'nt think so with that big tower on the roof and it would make it near impossible to winch people up around it and with the hot thermals coming up from a fire etc. Jumping would be quicker.
