Air Canada files for bankruptcy protection

Air Canada says it is filing for bankruptcy protection.

The company says it wants protection from creditors, while it seeks to reorganise the business.

It also wants to negotiate concessions from unions and help from the government.

Shares in Canada's dominant airline hit a new 52 week low on Monday.

Trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange was halted pending the announcement.

The move means Air Canada will continue flying during a reorganisation period.
