BTW, I detect a distinct 'pecking order' in many of the Thai restaurants I have been to here in Oz, and it almost always places female employees at the bottom. The sole exception is a chain of restaurants in Brissie which are run by a woman - she only has to give the waiters a single look and the level of service moves up a notch. It has paid off - she has a wall filled with awards for both the quality of the food and her business acumen.

Oh not Paula (Porn) of ?? What was the name of that restaurant ... shit it's been awhile. Yeah Paula has here shit together, trained at the Oriental I think, pity she can't keep it authentic she often uses Malaysian or Chinese chefs. My experience of Thai restaurants in Oz is that they often bring over the conventional Thai heirarchy so it might seem that the female employees get the rough end of the stick but it got more to do with employer/employee relations rather than gender distinctions.

Thai restaurant hint: stick your head in the kitchen and listen to the language they're speaking, if it ain't Thai (or variation of) then you're outta luck.

[color:"red"] If you look like your passport photo, you definitely need that trip.

I look worse, may be I can grow beard? :neener:

Living in the West gives me more opportunities to meet many Thais from differrent backgrounds. If I were to stay in Thailand, I would have been like most of my Thai friends (nothing really bad, mind you) that I would have not met ex-prostitutes and got to like some of them

Men are priviledge in Thai society wherever they are.

Cheers!

The restaurant I am referring to is the Royal Thai Orchid at Milton. She also has a restaurant of the same name in Springwood - I am assured that the food is every bit as good. I cant remember her name, but 'Paula' doesnt ring any bells.

This URL has a link for the restaurant in question, but it points to a restaurant in Sydney (!). I havent been to even 1/4 of the restaurants mentioned in this list, but I get hungry thinkging about it :)

Good post thanks.

I own a Thai (what else) restaurant in the middle of Sydney.

All thai Staff no way falang work in it.

A restaurant that gets a lot of good raps is Chilli Lime Na Chille lime 2

We went a few months ago...not a Thai in sight !

Food very basic indeed.

Many restaurants like this in Sydney as Thai is the food at the moment (chinese used to be number 1) .

only the traditional will survive IMO.

TB worked one night in my restaurant when the home delivery boy called in sick.

I gave him the wash up job! ::

darling i can speak thai he said......you are not THAI go back and wash up :doah:

Really? Interesting I waited parttime at Baan Thai restaurant in Brisbane for about 2 years. Not the only falang either but we were all exchange students so our language skills were good - wrote the orders in Thai. I think waiting staff is OK but falang should stay out of the kitchen.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that one doesnt necessarily have to BE Thai to cook 'authentic' Thai food, but it certainly helps in the credibility stakes. If I go to an Asian restaurant, and do not see any Asians working there, I usually dont hang around.

Hi,

You are right that you don't need to be a Thai to cook the authentic Thai food. A Mexican I knew once could cook the "Pad Thai" which was out of this world!!!

I find it funny that people assume that I can cook Thai food (of course I know how to fake it and Hubby does not know any difference). When I am asked for recipes, I normally said I don;t have it in writing!!!! :: :: :D

Jas, I'm sure that you make a lovely meal, regardless of its 'authentic' nature. A large part of cooking, IMO, is knowing how to do the simple things well : ehnce my fondness for bangers and mash :)

I have a confession to make - generally, I enjoy the Thai and Chinese food on offer in Oz more than most of what I have sampled in either Thailand, Southern China, Singapore or HK. I know that makes me a Philistine, but other than one or two meals I had in each country, most of it simply wasnt suited to my tastes. I admit that my pathological fear of being poisoned prevented me from sampling the street food in Thailand, and I'm assured that it is sensational, but I did throw caution to the wind in China and found that it seemed to lack that 'oomph' that they put in the local version. Probably MSG .... ::
