Spinning Dwarf
Sad to hear that Wong owner/proprietor of Wong's Place in Ngam Duplhi died earlier this week of lung cancer. Wong ran one of Bangkok's greatest whole-in-the-wall bars with an incredible collection of 60s and 70s music videos. The cremation will take place at 6:30PM on Saturday 17 May at Wat Hualompong on Rama 4 Road. Review of Wong's Place: Uncovered: Bangkok by Joshua Kurlantzick Wong's Place Few places retain the ambiance of the Vietnam War era, when spies, drug lords, pirates, freelance journalists and other brigands washed up in Bangkok. Wong's a major journalist hangout, is one of the exceptions. As videos of obscure 1960s stars play overhead on the creaky TV, expatriates from around southeast Asia sit on grimy naugahyde stools and swap stories over the cheapest beer and whiskey in town. Some discreet eavesdropping can yield fascinating tales. There's no service ? patrons just take alcohol out of Wong's big fridge and pay him later. Half the time Wong doesn't bother to collect, as he's too absorbed behind the bar learning new Jimi Hendrix songs on his guitar. The walls are decorated with photos of decades of drunken chaos at Wong's Otherwise, the decor is, well, nonexistent. And don't venture into the bathroom unless you're desperate.
