It would be of little use to the poster to end in a say Puutai speaking enviroment. Especially the elder folks are very reluctant or even incapable of speaking the central dialect. Guest Posted July 2, 2003 Report Share Posted July 2, 2003 In australian universities, languages taught at the first year level are designed to bring a student to matriculation (year 12 level). Although the courses are only 3 hrs per week, the student is expected to put in an additional 7 hours per week. so at 10 hours per week, by 2 semesters of 14 weeks each one should have attained a working knowledge in 280 hours. Add another two years (560 hours) and you should be (in theory) relatively fluent. Having said all this, there is no substitute for contextual practice in the country itslef or with native speakers.
