Bangkok 2 Nong Khai

I never been to Nong Khai and I plan to spend 3 or 4 days NK and the mekong river side.

I would like to see the country side and would prefer a bus or train then the flight. Which is better of the both ? I plan to travel during the day, not to miss the nightslife either at the Bkk or NK ::

thanks

cheers

Vinod

hopes this helps.

i took the overnight train a couple of years ago with a girl and i was really impressed with the service.

almost a 12 hour trip and better if you go overnight.

but take your own food and drink in case you get a case of the munchies.

i got the bus back from NK to BKK during the day and it was a long trip.

not much to see really, only good things to see were when you approached BKK.

Nice place to stay a few days around the Mekong.

Must see that weird temple 10km out of town, ask P127 or see the lousy Lonely Planet.

Check for train at http://www.railway.co.th/search/mainTableENG.htm

only one day train to Udon Thani leaving bkk at 08.20

Don't take the bus from bkk, it's a pain in the arse. Well from Udon take a bus, not that far and visit Udon whilst you're there.

The temple Thalenoi is referring to is indeed ZE thing to see in NK. Just about 4 kms outside the city limits on the main highway. It is very popular now with thais. Found this about it:

also, NK is a good place to shop for silver in the market near the old immigration office, by the river.

You don't need 1st class if you take a train. If a sleeper the 2nd class is better for one person, or you will be sharing with a stranger and the cross-car sleeping tends to throw you out of the bed each time the train stops (many times). If you want day travel Sprinter Rail Cars are the best option (not sure if they travel Nong Khai) and are priced at about 2nd class fares.

when i travelled to NK on the overnight sleeper,my girl and i had an upper berth each.

not for me and we snuggled up together in one of the berths.

a bit small for 2 people and a little uncomfortable, but bearable.

but one thing,i found it got very cold and we both slept under the blankets with our clothes on.
