Guest
just got a book from bookazine yesterday, a study on katoey, "the third sex" by richard totman. i am still at the first chapters, but so far it appears to be very competent and extremely well researched, a long overdue project. Guest
just finished reading. absolutely brilliant. a very openminded, solidly researched study, and also extremely readable. it somehwhat follows the life of three katoey from chiangmai, with chapters going into many different aspects of kateoy, such as history, religion, contemporary culture and comparisms with other cultures where transgendered play a large role. i could not detect any significant mistake. that is a definite standard work on katoey, a must read for anyone interested in thailand. elef
Hi Fly, I don't know if you understand French, but there are some interesting works - also in internet - about the third sex in tahitian culture. So you have something to compare with! :: elef

pattaya127
Thanks, Fly. As you give it your imprimatur, no doubt it will find a place on my Thailand shelf at some point. Is it published in Thailand? Finally found this afternoon the book by DR Kabilsingh "thai women in Buddhism". Also, have you seen this new book " the funeral casino" , talk at lentgh about the events of 1992, and how images of dead demosntrators were used by the students, and then more generally (but in post-graduate "Foucault" jargon ) about dead corpse meditation and wakes in Thailand. Right up your alley, no?
Guest
published by silkwormbooks, there's a link on the backcover: www.silkwormbooks.info haven't seen the other books yet, but no study on '92 will ever be complete until a government here will declassify the personal account of suchinda (which most likely is not going to happen soon). dead corpse meditation...a fascinating subject... pattaya127
but no study on '92 -------------------------- yes, this is not a book on 92 events, just correlating behaviours pertaining to his research. I did not buy it, but he seems to go at length into reasons that brought people on to the street, going back to the history of student mvmt, and the symbols of struggle shown in using the dead. The problem with thses books is that they are not written for the public but for fellow researchers. Some real good infos, and at the same time plenty of socio-scientifico-semantico jargon . MaiLuk
Fly, In another thread i said that hormones in utero can affect gender development and be more determinative than chromosones (i think this is what i said anyway). You asked for the research, well i came across these names and summaries of the various conditions, you can run a search using the names if you are still interested in more info: summaries You said to read the book if you want to understand thailand, wondering what it is about the book that made you say that? Guest
thanx, i have found a lot of research on that subject as well, there is even an "intersex society" with a very extensive website. the book here also talks about some of those things. fascinating subject. the reason i would say that this study is very important for the understanding of thailand is that it talks a lot also on thai society and its perceptions in order to understand katoey. and i have found nothing which i would disagree with really (apart from a few minor points which are of no importance). the whole book is not just a book on katoey, it also, maybe unintentionally, touches on some very good observations on thai society in general. a very unusual study.
