LAWYERS AID SCHOOLBOY HARASSED OVER AMERICAN HERITAGE FUKUOKA (Kyodo) More than 500 lawyers have joined hands with a 9-year-old boy in a lawsuit filed Wednesday with the Fukuoka District Court demanding 13 million yen from his school and a teacher who repeatedly ordered the child to kill himself. The boy, a fourth-grader who attends a municipal school in Fukuoka's Nishi Ward, suffers posttraumatic stress disorder as a result of his teacher's actions, according to the lawsuit. In an effort to show solidarity with the pupil and to make him feel that he is not isolated, 503 lawyers from around the country have put their names to the lawsuit. It is rare for such a large number of lawyers to be involved in one case. According to the suit, between May and June this year the 46-year-old male teacher repeatedly told the boy, whose great-grandfather is an American, to commit suicide, saying such things as: "Your blood is filthy, jump from your condominium and die," and "Haven't you died yet? Make sure you do today." The teacher has since been suspended from work. Furthermore, the teacher injured him on several occasions by making the boy choose from five forms of punishment, when it came time to go home. In one such punishment, "Pinnochio," the boy's nose was pinched so hard that it bled, the lawsuit said. Lawyers for the boy, who suffers convulsions and nausea and has said he wants to "change his blood" and that he does not deserve to live, made an appeal to colleagues nationwide asking for support. jack Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

gobbledonk Posted October 21, 2003 Report Share Posted October 21, 2003 This story is tragic, and its clearly more about abuse than anything else, but it does touch on something which seems to be threatening the very core of Japanese life. The relationship between students and teachers, and parents and children, in Japan was the subject of last nights Foreign Correspondent here in Oz. It would appear, if the report is to be believed, that the cracks are well-and-truly showing in the social fabric of the worlds most well-mannered society. Until recently, I had associated the 'tanty' with sugar-overdosed Western kiddies, but the vision from last nights show was quite alarming. Where were the well-behaved, obedient littlies we've come to expect in Asian schools ? Little monsters assaulting their classmates, and the teachers seemingly unable to deal with it. We now how hard it is for a teacher to lay hands on a child in our own countries - imagine how much ahrder it must be in Japan. How the hell do Japanese parents allow their adolescent offspring to become total hermits, shunning the competitive society just outside their door ? According to the report, crime in Japan has risen by 60% since 1994 .... The message was clear - if you deprive kids of a childhood and try to turn them into robots whose only goal is universirty entrance, you run the risk of fucking up your entire society. Kind of explains why I see so many young Japanese who are desperate to change their appearance and avoid being slotted into the pigeonhole that their parents have prepared for them. Imagine having so much expectation heaped upon you from the age of 3 or 4 ? The next 20 years will be very interesting for Japan, as the current crop of youngsters become the breadwinners (or not..). For example, what will happen to the Tokyo property market if they refuse to take on the debts of their parents ? Anthropologists beleive the only 'pure' Japanese are those still on the northern islands and that the 'Japanese' immigrated form Korea a few thousand years ago. A fact that is vehemently denied by both the Japanese and Koreans. Now if you really want to get some arguments going, suggest to Han Chinese that their forefathers and language came north from the Mekong Delta.
