New Zealanders & Beer

This probably doesn't really belong in this section, but it was too good a story to pass up.

Heard on the news today that a New Zealander recently paid $2,600 for ONE beer in a bar in Hong Kong. Apparently, he thought it was $2.60 and failed to notice that the . was a , and the extra 0's He didn't find out until he got home & got his credit card bill. Naturally, he objected to the CC company, but they told him that it was between him and the bar, as the receipt had not been tampered with, and he was not disputing signing it.

$2,600 for a beer, eh? Even if that's HK $, thats still around $300 US. Hope it was good beer........

Says asiahand:

He complained to the banking obudman but later withdrew it. you get what you deserve in HK.

I don't quite get that as the applicable law would be in New Zealand, presuming his credit card was from NZ.

I think he would have no problem in having the charge removed from his account.
