Protecting Your Miles Against Bankruptcy

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Experts and financial analyst are saying that many airlines and other travel

companies will likely go into bankruptcy and some may even go out of

business, which recently happened with Midway Airlines and Ansett Airlines

in Australia. While Midway had no formal frequent flyer program (this time),

Ansett did (Global Rewards) and the members of that program have as of now,

lost all their miles and awards as no other program stepped forward to honor

them. Many of you are worried and have asked us what solutions there might

be.

AwardGuard has been around for 10 years now, protecting frequent flyer

members against losing their miles and points to a programs bankruptcy.

They've covered all major programs during these ten years, including the

bankruptcy of the original Midway Airlines frequent flyer program when

700,000 members lost all their awards in 1991 - except those who had

AwardGuard protection. In fact, AwardGuard is still satisfying claims from

that program today since members can continue their protected awards as long

as they are members.

What's Ahead For Mileage Promotions?

-----------------------------------------------------

This is a constant question here at WebFlyer, so we asked our very own Randy

Petersen for a short overview.

We're preparing a report of what's ahead for frequent flyers which centers

around three things: 1) all current communications with members have been

pulled, which means newsletters and statements will be late for most of you.

2) All programs are reviewing changes to requalifying standards for elite

levels. Three scenarios emerge: lower levels, extended periods to requalify

into Jan/Feb next year and bonuses that count toward requalification such as

double miles and partner activity; 3) bonuses such as double and triple

miles aren't as effective in the current situation. I believe you'll see the

emergence of promotions like "Fly Three, Get One Free" which do stimulate

threshold flight activity. These free tickets you might earn will only be

valid for a 6-month to one-year period and you might see "Fly Five (or

Seven) Get the World Free" which for more flights allows you to use the free

ticket anywhere in the world. Again, all designed for getting people on the

planes. This way, airlines don't muddy up their usual double and triple

miles offers which lead to extended liability while the free tickets

mentioned above only have limited long lasting liability and using the free

tickets will stimulate partner activity with hotels, car rentals and even

credit card activity. Free flights get people back in the mentality to fly,

which bonus miles don't - they are for saving and using later....maybe too

much later for the airlines.

This is somewhat uncharted territory and we'll all know much more in about a

month's time. So watch for what we have to say.

Airline upgrades may now be available.

I always buy a cheap ticket to BKK from the US East Coast and use my miles to upgrade. When I booked my November trip a few weeks ago I could only get confirmed ugrades to and from the East to San Francisco. This week I called United to see if any cancellations had freed seats. The answer was yes. They immediately confirmed me for upgrades all the way to BKK and from BKK back to Tokyo.
