Torneyboy
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says harsher punishment is needed for those who attack tourists. His comments following two recent violent robbery attempts against foreign tourists by taxi drivers. Last week,Lee Yan chuan from China was seriously injured by a cabbie who tried to rob her on the motorway. Japan Airlines stewardess Yoshimi Noguchi was shot and wounded in downtown Bangkok by a taxi driver. She was admitted to hospital and has since gone home. Both taxi drivers were driving yellow-green taxis and both are still at large. Mr Thaksin said he was considering doubling the penalty for offenders who injure tourists as word of the attacks was damaging tourism. Taxi drivers must keep an eye on their colleagues or people would stop using the services of the 30000 green-yellow taxis plying the roads. A sketch of the cross-eyed driver who injured the chinese tourist was made by the scientific crime detection division with the help of the victim. He also said the police should speed up the investigations and check all information about yellow-green taxis to arrest the offenders as soon as possible.. What is the current penalty.. OCgringo
seems like finding a cross eyed taxi driver would be pretty easy , at least to narrow down the suspects. whoever hands over the taxis at the beginning / end of a shift would know who was crosseyed.... maybe they also need to get though on the pick pocket ladyboys
rickfarang
Doubling the penalty sounds like a nice idea, but solving the problem that creates the atmosphere in which tourists and others can be vicitimised may be bettter. Futhere, if a high government official were to offer to compensate individuals who are robbed or injured while visiting the country, it would be welcomed, I am sure. Flashermac
An interesting theory of law ... different penalties if the victim is Thai or a tourist. And what about expats? I can just see the legal beagles having fun with this one. Why not just catch the perp and shoot him "resisting arrest" as usual?
whosyourdaddy
Think Expats would be considered locals, unless the newspapers get involved. Just another reason to raise the price of cabs. Unfortunately if they increase the meter flag fair the cab companies will just increase the price of the rentals and the money will go to the top of the food chain. I have noticed that this goverment has increased tensions everywhere and people are getting a bit more desperate and trying get their hands in this bubble economy. cardinalblue
We have in the west the same type of mentality for crimes. Certain type of crimes (hate, gang-related), crime during certain periods (war) and number of crimes committed (3 strikes and your out in calif) dominate our thinking when making laws. Too bad it focusing on the symptoms and not the causes. I am in the oppiosite camp on this issue. This debate will always continue on how to deal with crime... rickfarang
"depending, same as thais if they pay the thai fare in double-priced entrance sites!" In that case, fare is fair.
Pescator
Hi Flashermac, An interesting theory of law ... different penalties if the victim is Thai or a tourist It is indeed an interesting theory. I just wonder, how on earth will they justify this? How will they find the justification for this differential treatment in the law books? And what will be next? Doubling the penalty for blacks too? As "tourists may be intimidated by all them big black nigerians hanging out in tourists areas" :: cheers Hua Nguu
pattaya127
Isn't sentencing up to the judge, and not a written in law, like in USA? I think it is to the discretion of the judge, so that a circular from Thaksin to the dpt of justice can ask for tougher pains.
