If an asylum seeker has a child in the Republic of Ireland then by way of a unique clause in the Irish constitution the child is automatically granted Irish citizenship. Thereafter the parents will probably be granted leave to remain even if their applications hadn't been dealt with. Apparently there were 42 such applications to remain by asylum seekers in 1992 which had increased to 11,000 last year. So, anyone with a Thai gf who wants to get her back to Europe then the solution is to get her up the duff. Fly her to Ireland just before she's due to drop. When she has the sprog the kid is Irish and then she can apply for leave to remain and eventually naturalization. As a member of a European Union state then she'd have the right to roam at will throughout other Union countries. Just a thought. Could be cobblers. (My fee for such astounding legal advice is 40000 baht. Payable in instalments if you must, 110 baht drinks at a time.) elef Posted July 12, 2001 Report Share Posted July 12, 2001 Hi Sukhumvit, just one problem. Ireland and UK didn't sign the Schengen treaty - so it's passport control from rest of EU + Norway. Persons staying in EU + Norway without being citizen need visa for Ireland. So your scheme requries TG get a visa for UK. Probably wouldn't even get out of Thailand but you never know what Irish immigration might say. Big Kev, true enough it's not unique to Eire. The reason why it's come out now is because apparently it's a scam which a lot of illegal immigrants to the UK from Nigeria are taking advantage of by sailing over the Irish Sea to Ireland. Once they have Irish citizenship it's a lot easier to move around the rest of Europe and do as they wish. Pity there aren't shiploads of Thai trickster chicks doing the same.
