rickfarang
(When will they start enforcing fire codes?) 3 die in fire at garment factory in Thailand www.chinaview.cn 2004-08-07 21:48:36 Â Â Â Â BANGKOK, Aug. 7 (Xinhuanet) -- A strong fire has been raging a garment plant in Din Daeng area in Bangkok, causing three casualties so far, while the whole seven-storey building was badly damaged. Â Â Â Â However, the fire is now under control, according to the Thai News Agency Saturday. Â Â Â Â The incident took place at around 01:00 p.m. when the fire began to rage the second, and then third and fourth storeys of the building, where pills of fabric and jean clothes were stocked. Â Â Â Â The whole building was later engulfed with the strong fire, spurred by chemicals in the clothing materials, while nearly a dozen fire engines rushing to the scene could not easily access to the building due to a narrow passage. Â Â Â Â Four people were reportedly trapped on the fourth floor of the building, two of whom are children, aged 2-3; while the rest two are baby sisters. Â Â Â Â The two baby sisters were later reportedly dead on the fifth and sixth floors of the building; while fire fighters managed to rescue one of the two children. Â Â Â Â However, the three-year-old boy, who was faint for long inhaling of smoke and was rushed to a nearby hospital by a police helicopter, was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Â Â Â Â The fire also damaged three cars parking on the first floor of the building. Â Â Â Â The fate of the other child trapped in the building has yet been known. With the amount of shit constructed in that country, even if they did 'start' it would take decades to fix. Shame that people have to die as a sprinkler system would've prevented loss of life. check_bin_krap
I remember the disaster in Khorat, building collapsed due to "short cuts" taken when building it... Until they lock up and throw away the key for the criminals involved, this will happen again and again!
cardinalblue
Bangkok and thailand are a long way from having the proper life safety codes and the compliance and the enforcement of them. Now the builders and owners will take short cuts in the name of profit. Why spend more and reduce their profit margin when the lack of knowledge and power in gov/private industry is lacking. These people's fate were sealed before the fire ever started. It was just their turn to leave this planet. I suspect thiese conditions play themselves all over the city every day and night. Is your turn next? What are you doing about it? Cardinalblue
Guest
Book a room on the first (jumping level) and make sure the windows are not nailed/barred shut. Seriously, though. I have a friend who lives in Chonburi, who's 25 year old son got caught in a nasty hotel fire a while back. Had to jump 3 or 4 stories and has been 'stuck' in thailand (rehab) for 8 months. Lost his job back home and walks with crutches now that he is out of the wheelchair. Just watch your ass over there. Have an escape route. Maybe buy a cheap smoke detector? cheers. frogpatrol
The fire took place very near my home, so I was able to see things transpire first hand. Most distressing was how long it took the non-volunteer fire brigade to arrive. And then when they did their job was made all the more difficult by very small sois with limited access. A common problem in BKK. Very dad. froggo
Guest
Yes, the narrow and crowded soi's are fire brigade nightmare added: the non-code construction and add-on's the nightmare traffic to respond thru lack of computer dispatch system Firefighters not cross-trained in medical the list could go on and on and on..... stay safe.
