SEAGATE AND THE THAI ROBOTICS SOCIETY ANNOUNCE THE ROBOCUP THAILAND CHAMPIONSHIP 2005

 

BANGKOK, Thailand?06 August 2004? Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited today announced its cooperation with the Thai Robotics Society, Mahidol University's Faculty of Engineering and the Thailand-Japan Technology Promotion Association in presenting the 2005 Robocup Thailand Championship. The final round contest, to be held on Feb 5-6, 2005 will select the best team to represent Thailand at World Robocup 2005 to be held in Osaka, Japan next year.

 

Associate Professor Dr. Manukid Parnichkun, president of the Thai Robotics Society said, "Cooperation between the Thai Robotics Society, Seagate, Mahidol University's Faculty of Engineering and the Technology Promotion Association is designed to further the knowledge and capabilities of students from diploma to higher education levels and enhance their expertise in the fields of electronics and robotics. This competition can strengthen the capabilities and development of Thai youth by providing them with the opportunity to participate in international forums."

 

Mrs. Supar Phokachaipat, senior director of Corporate Communications, Seagate Technology (Thailand) Limited said, "This is the third year of our sponsorship of the Robocup Thailand Championship. Seagate is one of the country's leading multinational enterprises and throughout our 20 year history in Thailand we have supported the enhancement of young people's capabilities in science and technology, as well as high-technology transfer projects."

 

Dr. Jackrit Suthakorn, chairman of Robocup Thailand Championship 2005, Faculty of Engineering, Mahidol University said, "The Four awards for this nationwide competition include the cash prize of 100,000 baht to the winning team, which will also represent Thailand at the World Robocup 2005 held in Osaka, Japan. The second-place team will receive a cash prize of 50,000 baht. The third-place team will receive a cash prize of 30,000 baht. The remaining teams that make up the eight finalists will receive cash prize of 20,000 baht per team."

 

"In the preliminary round, contestants will be required to build one robot which must maneuver around barriers and kick a football into a goal within five minutes. The top twelve teams with the highest scores will be taking part in the final round of competition. In the final round, contestants will be divided into two groups. Each group will be divided into four teams and all teams will be competing with each other. Each team must produce five small robots to take part in a football match against another 5 robots from another team. The team of five robots that scores the most goals in a 20-minute match wins," Dr. Suthakorn added.

 

Witaya Wannasuphoprasit, Ph.D., Chulalongkorn University lecturer who served as an advisor to Thailand's Plasma Z team in the World Robocup 2004 competition said, "The Thai team did its best in the world competition this year, achieving the same score as the Cornell University team which won in 2003. That past experience is very valuable, and highlighted that the secret of success is learning how to work as part of a team."

 

Thai nationality students studying in the diploma, the bachelors' degree or higher levels are eligible to apply. Each team should consist of three members and one advisor.
