Crackdown on sex ads

Published on December 09, 2004

Deputy Prime Minister Vishanu Krua-ngarm yesterday instructed special branch police to monitor newspapers and magazines for thinly disguised advertisements for prostitution services.

Vishanu said the crackdown was ordered because Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had received complaints from parents that the print media was full of such advertisements.

He said he had called a meeting with Pol Maj-General Suwat Thamrongsrisakul, deputy commissioner of the special branch, to discuss ways of combating advertisements for sex services.

Vishanu said police were already monitoring ads in newspapers and weekly magazines, but they were having trouble keeping tabs on infrequent publications such as auto magazines.

He said the special branch would first warn publications that carry sex-oriented ads that legal action would be taken against them if such ads persisted.
