December 24, 2004.

BKK court sentenced a 51 yr. old Swiss named Mr. Jiri Coleman to 2 years of jail and 8,000 Baht fine for buying sex and having sex with minors. Also jailed 3 Thai women involved in selling the minor for sex to Mr. Coleman on March 4, 2004. All were arrested at a hotel in Odian Circle area.

Other sentences from BKK court were:

For Mr. Scobel, Robert, a 56 yr. old Australian is sentenced for 7 months jail and 10,000 Baht fine, also Mr. Goss, John, an American is sentenced for 8 months in jail and 12,000 Baht fine. These 2 men were found guilty in exporting sex video, books and advertising to sell sex also with under aged females/males. They opened a company named ?Spice Trade Travel?. The Australian embassy helped the Thai police in this case. [/color]

Well, IMO, if ones succomb to such acts when there are so many older women to be bought in Thailand, ones deserve what they get. :(

Swiss paedophile gets two years jail

Published on December 25, 2004

The Criminal Court yesterday sentenced a Swiss man to two years in prison and a Bt8,000 fine for having sex with an underage girl.

Jiri Kolman was found guilty by the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court, which also sentenced three Thai women to five years and one month imprisonment for procuring an underage girl for sex.

The four, along with another defendant who was dismissed by the court yesterday, were arrested at a Bangkok hotel in June.

The court yesterday reduced the jail sentence for the women from eight years, citing their ?helpful testimonies? in the trial.

In another case, the court yesterday found a former Australian diplomat and his American business partner guilty of distributing pornography but freed them on suspended sentences, court officials said.

Robert Scoble, who served as Canberra's deputy ambassador to Vietnam in the 1980s, and American John Goss, were arrested in March and accused of distributing pornography following a raid on their Bangkok travel agency.

The Bangkok Southern Municipal Court found Scoble and Goss guilty and handed them jail terms of seven and eight months and fines of Bt10,000 baht and Bt12,000 respectively.

?But the jail terms were suspended for two years as they had not committed any crimes in the past,? a court official said.

Scoble, 56, and Goss were freed and are allowed to leave Thailand, the official told AFP.

Is it common for thai men to be arrested and get prison sentences for the same sort of offences as sex with underaged girls? It would seem to be pretty common esp in the countryside.

I have heard quite a lot, not from the media, about a country side school teacher who got one of his 13 year old students pregnant. It seemed in this case the teacher was forced to marry the girl to avoid any dealings with the police. This incident together with other stories makes me believe this is a common way to handle these cases up country.

When I taught at what is now Naresuan University, a 40-something year old Thai ajarn made passes at a 17 year old first year student. He actually suggested she would get a better grade if she would go to a hotel and sleep with him. The student complained to the rector, and the perp was called to account. His punishment? Really a rough one: they transfered him to Chiang Mai University! You were a bad boy, so now you have to leave beautiful fun filled Phitsanulok for the hardship post of Chiang Mai. It was a joke.

Hadn't heard about the shotgun marriage, and even by Thai law a girl cannot marry at 13. (Think it is 14 with parental consent.) More common it seems is the offending teacher is made to pay a few thousand baht to the molested or raped little girl's parents. And of course, the teach may be transfered to molest children somewhere else ...

this unfortunately is not unique to thailand.

in my catholic boarding school one priest was found out to have sexually abused several boys (ages 11 to 15). the church handled the thing themselves, sent him to another monastry even further up the the mountains. after a few years he was back in the old monastry, only that he was not allowed anymore in any teaching or educational occupation.

Up-country, molestation and statuatory rape accusations are usually handled by the village headman and the local police captain. The family of the victim gets to confront the perp, money changes hands, sometimes land or a pick-up; justice is served, face is saved.

I think you are right - that the legal age for marrying in Thailand is 14 with the paren'ts concent. However, I know of one 13 year old girl upcountry, who is from a wealthy family (which surprises me) who was married last year. The project, which included regrading a home site and substantially rebuilding a house for the bride took place about a year before the marriage. No kidding.
