The bush is no longer good enough

They never cease to amaze. Not only can they paint, play musical instruments in a pachyderm ensemble, and perform various other feats; some local elephants, it turns out, are also potty-trained. They never forget to flush either, of course.

During a demonstration at the private elephant camp of Palaad Tawanron restaurant behind the Chiang Mai Zoo, Diew, a five-year-old bull elephant who has a single tusk, positions himself adroitly on a toilet seat. He then uses his trunk to yank at a cord connected to the toilet?s handle ? and flush he does like the well-mannered potty-trained fellow he is.

All seven elephants at the Palaad Tawanron camp are being potty-trained. After a mere couple of days? worth of training, Diew and one of his mates can already do their business in a civilised manner. Soon, the camp?s regular elephant show will be able to delight spectators by adding this new feat.

All seven elephants and mahouts at the zoo?s elephant village are from Surin. They were brought here after they were found wandering about on the streets of Bangkok, cadging handouts from passers-by. The jumbos now enjoy a safe and convenient life of their own at the Chiang Mai Zoo, where they are on hand to take visitors on sightseeing rides around.

The elephant camp manager, who owns the Palaad Tawanron restaurant, explained that the idea to train the elephants to use a flush toilet came on a whim. Yet elephants are so intelligent that they can learn numerous new tricks at ease, he said.
