Makha Bucha Day Feb 23 2005

I am arriving BKK on Makha Bucha Day. This is a Theravada Buddhist religious holiday, on the third full moon. Bars will be closed. (Perhaps that is why reservations were easy to get for arrival that day!)

At first I thought, why me? But now I think, won't there be plenty of idle workers about, contemplating appropriate religious concepts, literally translated as:

Give up evil and refrain from sinning.

Cultivate good - and make merit

Cleanse one's mind.

Of course the literal translation is subject to interpretation in my native language, which might render it as:

Give in to evil, and refrain from swimming.

Cultivate good spirits, and make merry.

Cleanse one's little brain thoroughly.

Is this not most appropriate and respectful? I am very happy to have this occasion to contemplate these things!

The Reverend
