Free rides for drinkers

Published on March 02, 2005

Free rides between the Skytrain stations and pubs along Soi Thonglor and Soi Ekkamai in Bangkok?s Wattana district started last night.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration introduced the service to reduce traffic jams and prevent drunk driving. Three 10-seat electric vehicles ply the route from 8pm to 1am each night.

Their circular route begins at Thonglor Skytrain station, then goes to the H1 pub, the J Avenue pub, on to the Booze pub and the Santika pub and ends up at the Market Place Building ? before returning to the Skytrain station.

?Officials will be on hand at each stop to inform users of the route and to warn them against drunk driving,? said Wattana district office director Surakiart Limcharoen.

Electric Vehicles (Thailand) has provided the vehicles free of charge.

Deputy Bangkok governor Panich Wikitset said the pubs along Soi Thonglor and Soi Ekkamai attract a large number of patrons, many of whom arrive in their own vehicles, sometimes totalling more than 1,000, causing traffic congestion and a parking nuisance.
