Bestiality accused 'has drug problem'

A NEW ZEALAND man charged with animal cruelty and bestiality had mental health problems brought on by illegal drug use, his lawyer has told a Sydney court.

Brendan Francis McMahon, a 36-year-old finance broker, was refused bail today when he appeared in Central Local Court via video-link from Sydney's Silverwater Remand Centre.

McMahon was arrested last week and charged with 18 counts of aggravated animal cruelty involving 17 rabbits and a guinea pig, one count of bestiality and two charges of possessing cannabis.

McMahon, from Tamarama in Sydney's East, would also be charged with six new bestiality offences relating to rabbits, the court was told today.

Police allege all offences were committed between July 20 and August 11 this year.

Magistrate Allan Moore said he was unwilling to release McMahon before a complete psychiatric report was available.

"It's not in the interests of the community at large to release him without a psychiatric report," Mr Moore said.

McMahon's lawyer Douglas Marr told the court his client needed to be released to see a psychiatrist.

Mr Marr said his client was suffering serious mental health problems brought on by the use of the illegal amphetamine ice.

Mr Marr also told the court his client could not access funds to seek such help while he was in jail.

In the meantime all his business dealings were "falling in a heap", he said.

Mr Marr said his client could offer $5,000 surety and promised not to go within 50 metres of a pet shop if he were granted bail.

However, Mr Moore denied bail until authorities could complete their own psychiatric report.

Makes a change from shagging sheep, I guess...maybe a rabbitt's fur is smoother for him than a ewe...

This very sick and sad f**k has now been charged with multiple bestiality charges which carry a minimun 14 years jail sentence...he'll need more than a lucky rabbitt's leg inside the slammer! ::

just the guy you need to manage your superanuation, a mental speed freak who f@cks animals in his spare time. The pet shop owner probably got suspicious when he kept bounding in and asking "any more of those sexy rabbits, the last few kept busting. No bloody guinea pigs man i aint a freeking wierdo you know!!!!!!!!!!"
