New Survival Thai Course

The phrase book that works…and keeps on working

AIE, a school off Sukhumvit Road, plans to revolutionize Thai language instruction in Thailand. AIE has provided English language instruction for international students from Asia and Europe. According to Siriporn Phayapsiriporn, Managing Director of AIE, the center has developed a new Thai language course which has students quickly learning to communicate in Thai.

The course is called Survival Thai and is more like a phrase book than a traditional text. The twenty-hour course has topic-based sections like: buying fruit or giving directions or talking about your family. Each section presents a few essential phrases and words, which can be reused in many situations.

Philip Williams talked about his goals in creating the course; “We wanted to get away from the traditional system where the student sits in a boring classroom memorizing material not needed by a beginning speaker. So we cut it to the bare minimum. But this minimum certainly goes beyond mere survival.”

The daily task of learning a few new words and phrases can prove daunting. James Neal, co-developer of the AIE course, knows from personal experience how difficult this can be, “I must have the world's worst memory because I have to relearn a new word or phrase five, six, or seven times before I can remember it. I feel like I’ve relearned Japanese a dozen times and I still forget it as soon as I leave Japan.”

James said AIE stresses the review of previous material. “Usually teachers and students avoid reviewing, so we built it into the course. We constantly review and recycle the material from the previous lessons. Half of each lesson is devoted to learning new material, while the other half is review. So our students don’t just learn faster, they remember it longer.”

When AIE opened several years ago, Khun Siriporn, a long-time UK resident, wanted to establish a modern school with an international atmosphere. Her work in education taught her the value of creating an environment for enthusiastic learners.

AIE’s program is an exciting blend of realistic everyday situations with essential reviews that keep the student constantly active and interested. Philip said, “We want our students to look forward to their lessons, so we invest considerable time in training our teachers. We want them to be energetic, personable, and dynamic.”

It’s not difficult to get caught up in the AIE’s enthusiasm and exuberance. They feel they have created the ultimate Thai study program. The program offers private and group lessons from beginners to advanced. For more information call 02.741.5970~2.
