Teu vs khun

I'd guess Flashermac has managed to see the odd movie, seeing as he's lived in Thailand for 30 odd years.

I wouldn't say it's particulary common for a man to use 'Chan' either, but it is what they always use when singing love songs at least.

Pronoun usage is one of the interesting aspects of thai. There have been numerous academic studies published on thai pronoun use, focusing on the way thais have of defining age, position, level of respect,

family relationship etc etc through pronoun use. Lists like the one in the previous link are basic, and can be outdated, there are a huge number of possible pronouns thais can use, especially when you consider the way thais play with pronouns mixing in pronouns from different thai dialects etc (for eg the way bkk thai mix in chinese pronouns).

Most farangs sound silly when playing around with pronouns, its far safer to use phom, khun or the other persons name when khun would be too formal. Knowledge of the various pronouns is important so as to fully understand what thais are saying, especially in casual speech or in a thai

movie.
