The shift from u to o or the other way round can be quite irritating. In my early days in Thailand I used to pronounce the Thai word for "old(-fashioned)" as "buraan"; of course it should be "boraan", but I was used to Skt./Hindi "purana" (old)and in the process I really sounded old-fashioned to Thai ears - like straight out of Ramkhamhaeng's time!
