Guest
I hate seeing thai transliterated with dropped consonants though when speaking I also reduce most clusters to a single sound
Guest
surprised yourself!! I would expect you to ขออภัย "khor apai" beg forgiveness rather than just ขอโทษ "khor thort" beg pardon or excuse yourself!

I just surprised myself by using the slightly high-brow "apai" instead of "thort". If I'm not mistaken (I could be)it should stem from Skt. "abhaya", which means "freedom from fear", and by extension "guarantee of safety". So, if one apologizes in this manner, one basically begs not to be kicked around or even done in! Quite a refined way of apologizing, actually - and quite unlike me! [ August 04, 2001: Message edited by: Scum_Baggio ]
