Guest
My TGF gave me the name RAT... I'm hoping that there is a DIFFERENT context in LOS... perhaps it's a honorific title... NOT! --UPSer

She probably translated her Thai name "noo" (mouse) into English. It's actually considered quite a neat name. Or maybe her name is "Raet", rhino? Though I've never heard it used as a name, only as a kind of insult, as in "chaa muean raet", "slow like a rhino" (though they can be bloody fast sometimes), or "kee-giat (lazy) muean raet". Guest
You have to listen carefully and repeats names back to the people when they tell you, see if what you say sounds the same as what they say. The thai alphabet has a 1"b", as in bat 3"p's" (one high tone)as in pat and 1 "pb". an explosive "pb" as in ball. (Oz accent) Sometimes it's more "b" than "p" as in the thai word for "go". A sound which is halfway in between. To hear the difference between bai.. (a counting word) and pbai.. (go) ask a thai [ September 12, 2001: Message edited by: mushroom ]
