Thai officials cull bird flu infected chickens

Bangkok (dpa) - Thai health officials on Tuesday rushed to Kanchanaburi province, a popular tourist destination in western Thailand, to cull farm chickens in the latest outbreak of avian influenza, sources at the Bureau of Epidemiology said.

Thailand has this week detected isolated cases of bird flu in fighting cocks in six provinces, including Udon Thani, Kamphangphet, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Nakorn Phatom and now Kanchanburi.

Laboratory tests on Monday confirmed the presence of avian influenza in sparrows in the central province of Ratchaburi, about 105 kilometres southwest of Bangkok.

But health authorities claim there have been no recent cases of avian influenza being passed on to humans.

"At present there are no cases of bird flu transmitted to humans, and we have strong measures in place to monitor the epidemic," said Health Minister Suchai Charoenratanakul.

Altogether 12 Thais have died from bird flu over the past two years.

Thailand, after covering up an initial outbreak of the pandemic in late 2003, has since put in place a nationwide monitoring team, quick culling of sick poultry and a good compensation system for farmers who lose their stock.

The government has allocated a 100 million dollar budget to contain the pandemic over the next three years.

Thailand has purchased about 75,000 doses of anti-virul tamiflu for its stockpile.

"I am confident that we have enough (tamiflu) to fight bird flu in Thailand," said Suchai.
