keekwai
This may be something new to add to the arsenal along with anti-virus, adaware, spybot and Hijack This. From Sysinternals who offer many good free utilities: What is a Rootkit? The term rootkit is used to describe the mechanisms and techniques whereby malware, including viruses, spyware, and trojans, attempt to hide their presence from spyware blockers, antivirus, and system management utilities. There are several rootkit classifications depending on whether the malware survives reboot and whether it executes in user mode or kernel mode." http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RootkitRevealer.html
Boo Radley
While on the subject of Rootkits, there was an article recently about Sony installing and hiding their latest copy protection on computers via a Rootkit: http://tinyurl.com/auyjl http://tinyurl.com/9xozm
krml
Now Sony has released a patch to let you see the rootkit that is installed. Awfully nice of them. If there would not have been a media blow up about this they would never have done anything about it.
keekwai
That was how I came across the rootkit subject, from the story about Sony. I downloaded RootkitRevealer from Sysinternals to check out my disc. It doesn't install itself, just runs from what ever directory you place the executable in. Nothing exciting discovered though.
