Current state of the English Langauge

Hello,

This is not specifically related to Thailand, but since there are many current or former English-language teachers who read this board, I thought I would bring your attention to an article that was recently published on the Economist website at:

http://www.economist.com/world/europe/displayStory.cfm?Story_ID=883997

It discusses the role of the English language in the world today, and the threat (real or imagined) that it poses to other languages.

It's an interesting dilemma for countries like Thailand. Improving the level of English in the country helps their economy, international trade, technical development, tourism, etc. But conservative elements in the goverment no doubt worry about loss of traditional culture that comes along with this.
