Maggoty pork legs cause a furore

November 18, 2005

The Livestock Development Department seized 300 fresh pork legs from a supermarket in Chantaburi yesterday after about 100 maggots were found in food cooked with legs bought from the store.

Food seller Sudjai Wannawong, 48, claimed yesterday she would sue the supermarket for Bt7 million because it had allegedly damaged her business's reputation.

When a second food seller, from Tha Mai district, discovered maggots in fresh pork legs brought from the same supermarket, the livestock development officials seized 300 pork legs from the same batch for inspection.

The legs will be laboratory-tested for contaminating substances, said provincial livestock development official Kamol Rimkhiri.

"This is a one-in-a-million case," he added. "It may have resulted from live creatures living between the pork skin and the meat layer."

Food seller Sudjai also made a complaint to the Consumer Protection Board yesterday, with photographs of maggots in fresh pork legs and in a cooking pot, as well as a receipt from the supermarket.

Sudjai said she planned to sue the supermarket for Bt7 million in compensation for a ruined reputation after 20 years as a food caterer. About 400 wedding guests saw the maggots in a pork stew pot and spread the news, prompting three other party hosts to cancel her service.

Sudjai said she bought 20 pork legs for Bt1,500 from the supermarket on November 11 and cooked them on the same day for a wedding party. However, at the party the next morning the wedding guests saw the maggots and some even vomited in disgust. The wedding host refused to pay her the Bt30,000 as agreed.

She contacted the supermarket for an explanation and compensation, but had not heard from them.

Consumer Protection Board official Jirachai Multhongroy said his office would ask the supermarket to explain the incident and would attempt to get both sides to agree on compensation.
