Put a farang face on a Thai problem

"I have never been so proud to be Thai. At last our leadership is doing something to remove the stain upon our country's honor. The farang have made Thailand into the "Brothel of the World" , now they will be going elsewhere to abuse and humiliate women."

------------------------

This is a quote from another topic. Now I may not have been in Thailand for 20 years but I have done a little here, traveled around the countryside, and speak a little Thai.

In every village or town I have been to up country or south the two biggest buildings are never the town hall or museum or the library. They are the temple and the massage parlor. Obviously this is a cultural thing. However the thing I find interesting is that the massage parlor is usually the biggest, best maintained building in any village. Is this a farang stain on the country?

Did farangs come here and exploit these poor innocent, hard working, descent people. Or is this how it has been here for centuries and farang sex tourists came here because it was here already.

I have a Thai friend who lived in America. A Thai man. He always is amazed by American porn and web sites because he says in America you can talk about sex but you cant do it. In Thailand you can do it but you can?t talk about it.

I'll be damned! In 20+ years in Thailand, I've never yet seen a massage parlour in a village. Must have been looking the other way or something.

But yeah, you're right. The sex scene was here before any of the "evil foreign devils" discovered it. Every now and then some politicians tries to blame it on the Farangs, but they ordinary Thais aren't fooled... especially when some MPs won't even let the Farangs inside!

p.s. Check out Yaowarat (Chinatown) some time. There's an old nightlife that tourists don't even suspect exists.

I wonder what would happen if the authorities, upon discovering to their horror that something other than massages were available in massage parlours, closed them down. How long before thew authorities would be swiftly, and for some other reason entirely, deposed. Is it just me or do I feel a coup coming on ?

Massage Parlour the second largest building in the village?? Man I thought they were schools!

I have yet to visit a village with Massage Parlour, though I have been to more than one faery light place hidden in the back of beyond where service were provided. But they were always very small buildings.

I got to hear what you consider a village? Perhaps Khon Kaen City? Any place big enough to have a brothel will have as one of the largest buildings the governor's office.

Can we all say exaggerate? crazy.gif" border="0

Interesting thing, the history of prostitution. They should make it into a college course.

From what the 1999 Lonely Planet (p.153)says, it was the 19th century Chinese merchants who introduced their old habit of having a brothel on hand. However, the concubinary tradition in Thailand was established before that by the Indians and supposedly reaches as far back as the 15th century.

Also the present farang scene is only a fraction of what is there to serve the local population. So as far as I am concerned, we are just a small part of a colorful mosaic. Only the most visible...

“I have never been so proud to be Thai. At last our leadership is doing something to remove the stain upon our country's honor. The farang have made Thailand into the "Brothel of the World"

“Closing the Farang bar scene will save Thailand. These people are foreign devils 1) They are easy to identify by their race and color of their skin. 2) The revenue they bring to Thailand ie. hotels, taxies, eating, drinking, flying on Thai Airlines surely wont be missed”

“We Thais have no brothels or prostitution in our own culture. “

--------------------------------------------

The above quotes were posted in the on-line edition of The Nation website.

The people who wrote the above messages are well – overseas educated men and very, very naïf in saying that “we Thais have no brothels or prostitution in our own culture”.

There are many studies and research done by Thais and this has more that ones proven that in general the first sexual encounter by a Thai men will be with a prostitute. (read: pay for sex).

They are keeping themselves sightless in saying that there are no brothels. There are many, many brothels specific for Thais, in where you would not see any farang. These numbers are much larger, than the number of entertainment places, visited by Farangs and you can find them in every place, even in the rural areas.

These people do not realize that those women working in the scene are generally less educated and their ONLY drive is to provide a better living for themselves and their families.

Making sweeping statements that it is the foreign devils fault that there is prostitution in Thailand and that these devils can be identified on their race and skin color. This is to me bullshit and straightforward racial discrimination.

I love the idea of being a foreign devil. It reminds me of the first time I met the inlaws and the children hid. You know there's some sick part of me that almost enjoys all this shit hitting the fan. I almost can't wait to see what idiocy comes next. What's next week's big shocker. Soi Cowboy closed. Thermae burned to the ground. The army march into Nana Plaza and machine gun everyone in the vicinity. Khao San Road napalmed. Soi Zero eaten by biologically mutated cockroaches. The Malaysia hotel turned into a home for white elephants.

I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and find all this shit has been a dream.

As for the poster saying exageration?? Have you been to small villages and towns?? Try Aranya Prahtet, quite alot of massage parlours and karaoke joints with girls available, try Mae Soht, same thing, you can find brothels everywhere, even Bang Pae down by Koh samet has a whole street full of little karaoke and brothel houses. Sure it might not be the biggest building everywhere, but its there, everywhere..

Me and my wife own and run a "bungalow" up country (Isaan). Last year we had 125% occupation and only 4% of that was "farangs".

The thai people who is frequenting this bungalow for "short-times" also requests XXX-movies (for inspirations, or ...)

We do not supply prostitutes if we are asked, but many restaurants and karaoke-bars in the village do.

Of course I am happy with our business, - but hey! - say no more ... laugh.gif" border="0

Exaggerate.. ok start close to home.. Minburi, and Nonthaburi

Then Rayong and some other little mole hill between here and there

Also.. Kon Kaen, Nong Kai, Udon, and Surin.. Oh and Sakon Nakorn or however you spell that

and right here in BKK.. Poseidon, and Caesars

These are all Thai Only massage parlors I have been to.. Not that they wont let you in, just that they dont cater to foreigners and only speak Thai. I only went, or maybe got in, because I have a few friends from home who are either half or full Thai but full Americans and I speak more Thai than most of them...

But yes its true.. most, I would say, of the prostitution in Thailand is for Thai?s. Its just that we are more obvious about it. Thai men go in and get out, they have an expression that roughly translates as "pay fuck go" We are, as another poster said, easy to point the finger at. If you are foreigner and walking in a tourist area with a slightly dark skinned and or short thai girl.. the Thais assume she is a hooker. I mean why else would any Thai woman want to be with a foreigner.. Well that seems to be what the Thai men think

Yeah.. I think its bull shit? what was one of the ways you know when you have been in Thailand too long.. You're uncomfortable with public displays of affection, but

don't notice the massage parlors everywhere?. That and you stop at the bottom of the escalator to plan your day

These people are amazing? amazing Thailand
