The 50-year-old unidentified American was detained Friday night in the capital Phnom Penh after trying to avoid arrest by ramming his motorcycle into a police barricade and then attempting to flee after being handcuffed and put into the back of a police pickup truck, said police official Keo Thea. "He confessed to police that he has slept with many girls," said Keo Thea, adding the suspect has lived in Cambodia for six years. Beatrice Magnier, director of the French child advocacy group Action Pour Les Enfants, or Action for Children, said the American had been under her group's surveillance for about two months, and was seen bringing young girls into his apartment several times. Two of them, under the age of 15, told investigators he had sex with them, Magnier said. No formal charges have been filed. A U.S. Embassy spokesman couldn't immediately be reached for comment. In 2003, several Americans arrested in Cambodia for sexually abusing children were sent back to the United States under the Protect Act, which allows U.S. prosecution of Americans who abuse children in foreign countries.
