Tips for new mums on the way

The Nation 22/02/2006

More educational kits for new mothers will be distributed to hospitals next month, a Public Health Ministry official said yesterday.

The programme was initiated last July, but it ran out of kits ran by November, said Hygiene Department director-general Dr Somyot Jaroensak.

After the first 300,000 kits were distributed, a new manufacturer was selected but the firm produced substandard kits, causing a four-month hiatus in supply, Somyot explained.

Another manufacturer won the production contract with a bid of Bt290 per kit, compared to the department?s benchmark price of Bt346 per kit.

Somyot said 300,000 new kits would be available next month.

They will be distributed to mothers with infants who are four-months old or younger. Currently, hospitals are issuing vouchers that can be exchanged for kits next month. The kits provide mothers with vital information on how to care for infants during their first 18 months, Somyot said.
