10 skeletons unearthed in Tak

The Nation 23/02/2006

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) yesterday commenced an investigation into the discovery of 10 skeletal remains at a site in Tak?s Phop Phra district.

Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, acting director of the Justice Ministry?s Central Institute of Forensic Science, yesterday arrived in the northern province to identify the bodies, and to determine if any of them were those of the two local businessmen who went missing on March 22 last year.

A local intelligence source said the location of the find, near the Thai-Burmese border, was formerly a shelter for Burmese dissident groups who had fled military operations by Burmese soldiers.

?Traditionally, Karen villagers cremate or bury dead bodies in areas near where they live,? the source said.

The site is a large crater near a village in the tambon of Walay in the border district. Pornthip said an initial inspection had turned up bullets and burnt auto tyres, possibly indicating murders or criminal activities.

The forensic scientist said the entire inspection and identification process would take several days. The DSI was responsible for the criminal investigation into the discovery, as well as into the disappearance of Anek Phumngern and Prasobphol Thongphuang, the two missing businessmen, she said.

Pol Colonel Piyawat Kingkate, a special DSI agent, cited witness interviews speculating that both men were killed and their bodies were burnt in the village or at the site ? but scientific proof was needed to confirm their deaths.

He said the DSI had taken over the missing-person investigation from local police after relatives of both men lodged complaints.
