PHNOM PENH (AFP) - Cambodia has deported an American for running websites that promoted the impoverished kingdom as a destination for people who wanted to end their lives.

"We deported him this morning at 10 am because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a lot of complaints from many diplomats from other countries," the deputy chief of national police, General Sok Phal said Saturday.

"Unlike what he said, Cambodia is not a place where foreigners can come to commit suicide."

Californian Roger Graham, 57, who owned the Blue Mountain Coffee and Internet Cafe in the quiet coastal backwater of Kampot, had advertised his avid support of euthanasia, or mercy killing, on his websites www.euthanasiaincambodia.com and www.asian-hearts.com.

He has been the target of a volley of complaints after the websites, which promoted Cambodia as an ideal place for foreigners to end their lives, were blamed for encouraging a British woman to kill herself in Cambodia.

The 47-year-old had apparently visited Graham after seeing his websites and later committed suicide in a nearby hotel, according to police.

Sok Phal did not give any details on the link between the Briton's death and Graham's websites.

Provincial authorities in November filed a lawsuit again Graham, accusing him of damaging Kampot's image after the provincial governor had received more than 30 complaints about his business.

Kampot is about 130 kilometers (80 miles) southwest of the capital, Phnom Penh.

Graham reportedly came to Cambodia in 2003 from Paradise, California

The "Dr. Death" of Cambodia.

At first I thought this guy was a complete "wacko" but then the article mentioned "...support of euthanasia, or mercy killing..." so this is what the Dr. Death in Michigan had been involved in.

Tough publicity for Cambodia to take on.
