What is the psychology involved here? The dates come and go, but that doesn't stop them from constantly updating their forecasts. It's been going on since the beginning of history. Why? The religious ones want to see God punish humanity for it's sins. Some like to see human arrogance squashed by the power of nature. Then there are some who genuinely worry about the condition of the planet. I'm not sure where this guy with the comets fits in...looks like he has inside information.
