Cabinet approves 15 energy-saving measures

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) - The Thai cabinet on Tuesday approved 15 energy-saving measures for implementation in government organisations to reduce the financial losses in the state sector to higher energy costs, Deputy Government Spokesperson Sansanee Nakphong said Tuesday.

According to recommendations proposed by the Office of the Civil Service Commission, Thai state agencies should cut unnecessary travel by holding meetings via video conferencing, for example. Civil servants coming from upcountry provinces to Bangkok or to central headquarters should communicate and send reports and data by e-mail instead of sending messengers or regular transport, and to strictly observe budgets for overseas trips by civil servants by cutting those deemed unnecessary, Miss Sansanee said.

The measures also include the enforcement of having air-conditioners at state agencies turned off during office break times, converting government vehicles to Natural Gas for Vehicle (NGV) engines, and

refraining from holding meetings of civil servants on holidays or outside offices.

In addition, she said, official vehicles should be used only when necessary, and officials should use taxis if they find more economical than using state vehicles. If possible, some civil servants in some sectors

should be allowed to work from home.

The deputy government spokeswoman said the effectiveness of enforcing energy-saving measures by state agencies would be partly used to evaluate their performance efficiently. However, she said the energy-saving measures adopted by state agencies must not adversely affect the quality or efficiency of services provided to the public. (TNA)-E009
