Chanchao
Last weekend I went on a trip to the seaside resort town of Pattaya, where the highlight of course was seeing Germany get wasted by an excellent English football team. Of course this game lasted to well into the night, well past the 1am/2am government enforced closing time. In most bars, music and most of the colored lights were turned off at 2am, but this didn't stop the party! No music... so girls started *singing* Isan pop/folk songs. First just a few girls humming a bit, then louder and louder while things got merryer and merryer. Police was around sometimes, but to ban singing.... I think even the likes of Brezhnev didn't dare to go there. I love this country. It was so innocent, so beautiful, so fun, so .. sanuk. One can not force Thais to stop having/being 'sanuk', just as much as you can't tell them to throw out the whole cuisine and start eating potato's with gravy and boiled-to-death vegetables. The more things change, the more they're staying the same. I'm now completely convinced we have nothing to worry about. Cheers, Chanchao
