PM rattled on illegal immigration'

'PM rattled on illegal immigration'

Identity cards and electronic border checks were hailed by Tony Blair as the way to combat illegal immigrants .

But he also conceded that nobody knew how many were in the country.

Tory leader David Cameron said the premier was "rattled" and his Government "in paralysis" after the controversy over illegal immigration was the latest to engulf the Home Office.

The row was sparked by comments made by Dave Roberts, director of enforcement and removals at the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, who told MPs on Tuesday that he did not have "the faintest idea" how many illegal immigrants were in Britain.

Mr Roberts, who was giving evidence to the House of Commons home affairs committee, which is looking into immigration control, also said those who overstayed illegally were not pursued as "individuals".

On Wednesday morning Home Secretary John Reid admitted it was "disturbing" that the figures were not available.

But he stressed that data on illegal immigrant numbers had not been collected for at least 15 years.

Speaking during a visit to a community centre on the Townsend estate in Bournemouth, the Home Secretary said: "For the last 15 years these figures have not been available.

"That is a disturbing fact but it is not a new fact by any means.

"But what is new is at long last we are getting to grips with one aspect of it, which is failed asylum seekers. For the first time we are removing more failed asylum seekers than are coming into the country month by month."

the key word in these 2 statements is 'ILLEGAL'.

the Thai's may have a good database of visitors but do they have any idea of illegals entering the Country?.

just 2 Days ago a Man was found dead on a motorway near me and it is assumed he entered the UK clinging to the underneath of a lorry and then fell off and was killed.

would the Thais or anyone else have had a record of this Man if he had got into the UK successfully?.

it is an impossible task to keep track of illegals entering any Country.............

since they are "illegal" their numbers will never be known ,

same problem here in the USA, no idea how many , who they are , where they come from ,where they live , what they do etc

and if they do a crime they head back home with no real way to catch them ,

OC

PS.....we need immigrant workers to do the jobs we are too lazy to do , there just has to be a way to know who they are , and make them accountable for their actions.....
